Smart Thermostat Reviews 2017

Here’s the thing about smart thermostats—they’re great at helping you keep your home at the temperature you want, and when you want it to be at that temperature. The frustration is that while your new thermostat might be smart, your older furnace and air conditioning systems might be…well, not so smart.

Smart thermostats can make your home extremely energy efficient and keep it comfortable. The reason they’re called “smart” is because many of them have sophisticated technology that allows them to sense activity and program themselves to match what they detect.

The majority of smart thermostats require connectivity to your WiFi system so they can talk to each other, and to your smartphone. They’re easy to use once installed; however, they can be very difficult to put in yourself if you have an older or nonstandard HVAC system in your home.

This level of machine intelligence will determine the price and its usefulness. It’s very important to determine whether the one you want to install can work with your heating and air conditioning system. Otherwise, your new thermostat won’t be any smarter than the one you have now.

1. Nest Learning Thermostat, 3rd Generation, Works with Amazon Alexa

This is probably the name most people recognize and associate with smart thermostats. Nest’s built-in sensors detect motion and learn your schedule. You can tell it to program itself based on this. If you don’t feel like getting up, you can change the temperature using your smartphone. It has a beautiful stainless steel and glass design, and it senses, temperature, humidity, light, and motion.

2. Sensi Smart Thermostat, Wi-Fi, UP500W, Works with Amazon Alexa

Few people are frustrated with their smart thermostat’s function. Most headaches come from trying to install them. This model doesn’t need a common wire (c-wire) in many cases, making it compatible with most heating and cooling systems in the US and Canada. A smartphone app walks you through the installation process. You should have it up and running in about 15 minutes.

3. Ecobee3 Thermostat with Sensor, Wi-Fi, 2nd Generation, Works with Amazon Alexa

Where’s your current thermostat? Probably in the hallway. So, it’s comfortable right there…but exactly how much time do you spend in the hallway? This system uses a network of room sensors to help you control the temperature where you’re actually doing your living—or sleeping, or eating. Use your smartphone or watch to control it, or just ask Alexa to take care of it for you.

4. Honeywell RTH6580WF Wi-Fi 7-Day Programmable Thermostat

Don’t let this thermostat fool you. It might look just like the one you currently have. Honeywell skipped a fancy new design and focused on the technology that makes it run. This thermostat connects to your WiFi system so you can use Alexa to control it. There’s also a free smartphone app.

5. Emerson Sensi 1F86U-42WF Wi-Fi Thermostat

DIY installers give this thermostat high praise. As long as you’re comfortable with connecting the wires, the thermostat’s intuitive app will take you through each step of installation and configuration. This system is helpful if you’re unsure of the kind of HVAC system you have in your home. Once you’ve used the app to set it up, you can turn the job over to Alexa if you want.

6. Ecobee3 Lite Thermostat, Wi-Fi, Works with Amazon Alexa

It looks just like it’s Ecobee3 big brother, and it has most of the same functionality. But, if you’ve got an older home, you may not have any need for a smart thermostat that can also control things like humidity and airflow venting. In that case, you can save a bit and go with this version of the thermostat.

7. Honeywell TH9320WF5003 Wi-Fi 9000 Color Touch Screen Programmable Thermostat, 3.5 x 4.5- Inch, White

While some smart thermostats have nearly done away with any kind of display, Honeywell has gone in the opposite direction and included a colorful high-definition touch screen. Don’t like the color? Change it to match your décor. It’s WiFi enabled, so you can connect it to home systems. Use the smartphone app to control it, or go for that gorgeous touch screen. This product should be installed by a professional if you want full warranty protection.
